Choosing a career/changing a career – Part 2

If you are doing a job or working in an environment that brings you no satisfaction, no fulfillment or no joy, it’s time to look for a new job or a new career. Alternatively, if you have been in a particular job or a particular company and there seems to be no prospect for movement, growth or development, it may be time to consider moving on. Once that realization comes, it may be in your best interest and that of your current company to plan an exit strategy.

 

  • Start by writing down your goals – long term, medium term and short term. Then list your strengths, your interests and the things you are good at and enjoy doing. Consider what opportunities exist and do some research.
  • Determine what skills and talents are required for the job or career that you want. Make an honest assessment of your own skills and talents and determine what gaps exist if any. Begin to make a plan on how you intend to close the gaps.
  • One you think that you have the skills and talent that is in demand elsewhere you would gain the opportunities that you are looking for, the next most important step may be to do some work on your CV.
